Diving in Marsa Alam: A Red Sea Paradise

Marsa Alam, a once sleepy fishing village on the Egyptian coast, has transformed into a world-renowned diving destination. Nestled along the Red Sea’s western shores, Marsa Alam offers divers an unparalleled underwater adventure, boasting vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and crystal-clear waters.

Why Marsa Alam?

Unlike the more crowded resorts of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam has retained its pristine natural beauty. The reefs are teeming with life, from colorful fish and playful dolphins to graceful sea turtles and elusive dugongs. The visibility is often exceptional, allowing divers to fully appreciate the underwater spectacle.

Top Dive Sites

  1. Elphinstone Reef: This offshore reef is a magnet for pelagic species, including oceanic whitetip sharks, hammerheads, and manta rays. The steep walls and strong currents make it a thrilling dive for experienced divers.

  2. Abu Dabbab: This shallow bay is home to a resident dugong, affectionately known as “Dennis.” Snorkelers and divers alike can enjoy close encounters with this gentle giant, as well as sea turtles and stingrays.

  3. Dolphin House (Sha’ab Samadai): This horseshoe-shaped reef is a popular hangout for spinner dolphins. Snorkelers and divers can often swim alongside these playful creatures in their natural habitat.

  4. Marsa Mubarak: This sheltered bay is ideal for beginners and snorkelers. The shallow waters are home to a variety of colorful fish, as well as sea turtles and occasional dugongs.

When to Go

Marsa Alam enjoys a warm climate year-round, making it a great diving destination any time of year. However, the best time to dive is from April to June and September to November when the water temperatures are comfortable and the visibility is excellent.

Marsa Alam has its own international airport, making it easily accessible from major cities around the world. Alternatively, you can fly into Hurghada International Airport and take a shuttle bus or taxi to Marsa Alam.
